When I began to play Age of Empires II HD, the first thing I thought was, ‘Wow, this basic settlement grows into a complete medieval machine very fast. You go from a few villagers, a small amount of resources and a huge amount of unpopulated land to people building farms, armies and establishing trade routes, walls and defending against other armies all at the same time. That’s what drags you into it. It doesn’t need any fancy shamery. Sometimes the decision you made five minutes ago can make all the difference.

Age of Empires II HD is a real-time strategy game focused on medieval civilizations, economy, exploration, technology and combat. It delivers the classic Age of Empires II experience to PC in a high-definition presentation that includes a variety of single-player and multiplayer modes.

The game has the original campaigns from Age of Kings and The Conquerors, as well as 18 civilizations, each of whom has a slightly different take on how to develop and fight their wars. Technology is also very important. Moving between ages gives you access to more powerful units, buildings, upgrades, and economic bonuses. The trick is working out what your civilization needs to do at any given moment rather than just researching everything in the game. The maps also make each game feel different. Forests, hills, water, choke points, resources, and where your opponents decide to build their bases can all change the flow of the game in ways that help explain to me why it’s still such a joy to play.

Age of Empires II HD is happily straightforward. Collect resources. Develop your town. Research technologies. Train troops. Attack or defend. Not so simple, is it? The further into a match you delve, the more everything is joined together. Allowing a bunch of villagers to be destroyed could crush your economy. Putting off an upgrade could allow an opponent to get time to build an army. Poorly positioned armies get stuck, clever defensive positioning gains time.

The civilizations also put their own spin on matches. Aggressive play with one civilization can feel a world apart from selecting one that encourages defensive tactics or a focus on economy. The campaigns provide yet more variation. Rather than having every match begin with the same blank canvas and the same objectives, they whisk you away to historical set-pieces with their own missions, battles, and context.

Final Thoughts

Age of Empires II HD is one of those strategy games where the first time you play for 20 minutes you think you might as well have done nothing. It’s just that type of game. The UI is easy to get to grips with, the objectives are straightforward, and the resource gathering system is simple enough to grasp. Once you get under it, however, and start worrying about time, scouts, counters, economy, position, and tech, you are going to have some pretty intense hurdles to overcome.

It also has that “school-yard” approach where you don’t quite feel it was a waste of time to lose. Whether you figure out exactly where things went wrong straight away, or you discover what 20 minutes later was only 1 decision that made everything go pear-shaped, truthfully – that’s kind of the draw of the game. Age of Empires II HD is a pared-back medieval RTS, complete with campaigns, many civilizations, multiplayer, custom content and enough option/strategic depth to keep you interested in old familiar maps. If you like your games as a slow build up of a small settlement to a functioning empire which you then send out for war, there is still a lot to love here.
